Beauty is deliberately dulled so the plot can enjoy being underestimated. A chronic condition in which an intentionally plain, grimy, or awkward surface is maintained until the designated episode requires the room to apologize.

Why it works (and why the makeup department has a second job)

An unattractive appearance grants access, neglect, and freedom from pursuit. It works as both survival tool and delay mechanism. It becomes syndrome when the same character who is competent in every other domain must also fail at basic grooming until the transformation scene is scheduled. Public dismissal generates the necessary misrecognition. Private knowledge of the real face generates leverage. True motives travel more easily behind the dull surface; intrigue, favor suddenly reversed, intimidation avoided through apparent harmlessness, and assassination risk that spikes on reveal all pivot on the moment the protocol is lifted.

Situations it is used in

• Public dullness: schools, workplaces, courts, or streets where the surface produces neglect or contempt on cue
• Private reveal: closed rooms in which the real face is shown to one witness and immediately rewrites the terms
• Intrigue advanced by the freedom of not being watched as desirable or dangerous
• Disguise maintained with remarkable consistency until the narrative window opens
• Favor withheld from the plain version and abruptly available afterward
• Intimidation sidestepped because the appearance signals “not worth the effort”
• Assassination risk suppressed during the protocol and elevated the moment beauty or identity returns
• Most often female presentation; male variants exist but trigger the full syndrome less reliably
• The diagnostic drop of the disguise, frequently accompanied by lighting changes
• Later review of earlier scenes so the missed recognition can be scored

Soft: walking unseen can still be protection. Choosing when to be seen is not automatically a party trick.
