The observer was issued a target and has developed complications. A progressive condition in which prolonged surveillance produces unauthorized affection, reports begin to contain editorial omissions, and the original mission experiences critical system failure.

Why it works (and why handlers should have read the risks)

Legitimate access plus extended proximity is a known hazard. It works as intimacy engine. It becomes syndrome when every undercover operative in a romance-adjacent environment is statistically likely to defect via feelings, and “I was assigned to watch you” is treated as a standard meet-cute variant. Public cover maintains operational plausibility. Private softening runs the actual plot. True motives may start professional; the protocol simply ensures professionalism does not survive contact with the target. Intrigue, edited reports, protective favor, and eventual mission assassination are expected adverse events.

Situations it is used in

• Public compliance: continued performance of the assigned role
• Private non-compliance: closed rooms in which orders are quietly revised
• Intrigue conducted with deteriorating dual loyalty
• Disguise maintained until emotional leakage makes it unsustainable
• Favor expressed as withheld intelligence or active interference
• Intimidation redirected toward former command structure
• Assassination of the mission (or, in darker strains, delayed assassination of the target)
• Male and female agents fully susceptible
• The diagnostic period of increasingly creative report writing
• Later review in which early surveillance is reclassified as involuntary courtship

Soft clinic

Soft: disarmament can still be romance. Choosing the person over the brief is not automatically a trope malfunction.

Mirror clinic

Mirror: Assignment Failure Protocol engaged. Target has compromised operative. Reports no longer reliable. Handlers advised that feelings are a known contraindication. “I was assigned to watch you” starter pack deployed.

Regional flavor

• Korea: K: high transmission in action-romance hybrids. Protocol runs with full stakes. Soft clinic still validates costly disarmament. Mirror clinic notes efficient access-to-rupture pipeline.
• China: C: strong historical and modern agent strain. Allegiance rewrites common. Soft clinic honors protection outside the brief. Mirror clinic points at reliable double-life charging.
• Japan: J: lower incidence, quieter thriller edges. Soft clinic still recognizes the break. Mirror clinic observes reduced volume does not prevent assignment failure when deployed.
