Between the Lines
The rain was absolute chaos outside, but inside the empty office, the tension was sharper.
Elena stared at the final layout on her screen. After six months of fighting for the creative lead position, the promotion had been handed to them as a co-role. She had to share her victory with the one person who knew exactly how to push her buttons.
“You’re glaring at the font again,” a voice drawled from the doorway.
Julian leaned against the frame, his jacket damp from the storm, his tie loosened just enough to look effortlessly annoying.
“The font is fine,” Elena said, not looking up. “Your layout logic is what’s giving me a headache. We’re supposed to submit this as a joint proposal, Julian. Joint means we agree.”
Julian walked over, stopping right at the edge of her desk. He didn’t look at the screen. He looked down at her. “We never agree, Elena. That’s what makes the work good.”
“It makes the work exhausting,” she muttered, finally looking up to face him.
The casual arrogance she expected wasn’t there. Instead, his dark eyes were intensely focused on her, tracking the slight frustration in her expression. The silence between them stretched, no longer filled with professional bickering, but with something heavy and unsaid that had been building between them for months.
Julian leaned down, placing his hands flat on her desk, bringing his face level with hers. “Is it just the work that exhausts you?” he asked, his voice dropping an octave.
Elena’s breath hitched. She looked from his eyes down to his lips, then back up, suddenly hyper-aware of how close he was, and how easily the thin line between rivalry and attraction had just vanished.
“Julian,” she whispered, a warning that sounded entirely unconvincing.
“Tell me to go back to my office, Elena,” he murmured, closing the distance by a fraction of an inch. “Because if you don’t, I’m going to kiss you.”
