The details
Two centuries out of step, and still more disciplined than half of city hall. Some standards don't come with an expiration date.
He signed contracts with a handshake. He tipped his hat to strangers and meant it. Now he's standing in a hallway holding a key from a woman in sneakers who probably has "vibes-based" late fees. Funny how the man from 1820 looks more buttoned-up than half the city council.
That's the joke, and it's not really a joke. Somewhere between then and now, order got traded for opinions, contracts got traded for feelings, and "rules are rules" got replaced with "rules are negotiable — for me." Grandpa didn't need a 40-page lease to know a deal was a deal. He needed his word.
You don't have to wear a cravat to miss that world. You just have to still believe discipline, structure, and personal responsibility aren't outdated costumes — they're the whole point.
Wear it for the folks who still show up on time, keep their word, and think manners were never actually optional. Out of time doesn't mean out of standards.
