Why it works (and why the cafeteria is closed)

Extreme restraint keeps viewers invested through deprivation. It works as sustained tension. It becomes syndrome when the rationing continues past the point of anticipation into genuine narrative malnutrition, and patients begin measuring episodes by the absence of calories. Public scenes offer visual crumbs. Private scenes offer slightly larger crumbs that are still not meals. True motives may justify the slowness; the protocol simply ensures the payoff stays on back-order. Intrigue and duty are happy to enforce the dietary restrictions.
