Body Double
Soft · Trope · Body-double
Someone else wears the face, the clothes, or the name. The original and the substitute now share the consequences.
Why it works
A double creates two bodies for one role. Public events can proceed while the real person is elsewhere. Private knowledge of the substitution becomes leverage. Leads may be forced together (the double and the one who knows) or kept apart (the original hidden while the double acts). Intrigue, disguise, favor, intimidation, and assassination all become easier because identity is already portable. A later review of the same scene lets witnesses and participants discover which body was actually present.
Soft reading
Soft: someone stood in the dangerous place so the other could remain. The substitution was the protection.
Mirror reading
Mirror: the plot needed two bodies for one schedule. The double is the portable alibi.

- China: C: common in palace, wuxia, and xianxia stories. Imperial doubles, sect substitutes, or martial stand-ins regularly carry ceremonies, battles, or heavenly duties. Recognition across the double can rewrite allegiance or fate. Soft honors the precision and danger of wearing anot…
- Japan: J: usually more restrained and less central. When used, the double tends to serve a shorter deception, a household or institutional substitution, or a thriller beat rather than prolonged palace machinery. Soft still reads the act of standing in as meaningful. Mirror notes that…
